Selecting the correct type of materials is essential when performing engineering of pipelines and subsea facilities. Pipelines and subsea equipment like piping, valves, connections and manifolds are often exposed to an extreme environment both internally and externally. Selection of wrong materials or having insufficient corrosion protection could result in critical situations with respect to failure, leakages, pollution and personnel safety. It is necessary to protect pipelines and other equipment against external corrosion and loads from dropped objects and trawling activity by use of a coating system.

Pipeline coating is to be selected based on design life, temperature and different requirements for corrosion protection, on-bottom stability and external impacts during installation and operation. Free spans can give fatigue in the pipeline requiring detail analyses and possibly mitigating measures.
